The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Kazakhstan-initiated resolution proclaiming April 22 as the International Day of Greening the Planet.
The resolution was adopted in New York on Aug. 31. The initiative was first proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.
Thirty-two countries from different regions of the world joined the resolution as co-sponsors, reflecting broad international support for the initiative. The new international day is intended to raise global awareness of the importance of greening and restoring natural ecosystems and encourage governments, the UN system, international and regional organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to undertake related initiatives and activities.
