Kazakhstan has expanded the pilot project for the automatic release of transit declarations for goods transported by rail. This helps reduce the time required to undergo state, including customs, control procedures and increases the throughput capacity of railway border crossing points.
The project has been implemented since 2024 as part of the development of «through transit» whereby a container train passes through Kazakhstan without unloading the goods and continues onward to third countries. At the initial stage, the automatic release of transit declarations was introduced on the Altynkol–Saryagash, Altynkol–Morport, and Altynkol–Temirzhol–Brest-Severny routes.
Thanks to automation, the time required for a container train to pass through a border crossing point has been reduced from 3 hours to 30 minutes. This is particularly important for the development of transit transportation through Kazakhstan and the expansion of international rail traffic.
The project results demonstrate that in 2025, more than 137,500 transit declarations were processed, of which 4,800 were automatically released for the European direction, 105,400 for Central Asia, and 27,200 declarations under the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).
During the first seven months of 2026, more than 92,100 transit declarations were processed, of which 13,200 were automatically released for the European direction, 58,300 for Central Asia, and 20,600 declarations under the TITR.
Taking into account the positive results, the pilot project was expanded as of August 17, 2026. Automatic release of transit declarations is now also applied on the «Altynkol–Brest-Vostochny–Brest-Centralny railway stations» and «Temirzhol–Brest-Vostochny–Brest-Centralny railway stations» routes.
The expansion of the project is aimed at further accelerating transit transportation, reducing the time required for procedures, and creating more convenient conditions for participants in foreign economic activity.
