The history of independent Kazakhstan began with an important event that marked a turning point on the path to statehood.
On October 25, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. This historic document established the principle of the supremacy of republican authority within the territory of Kazakhstan and laid the legal foundation for the further development of an independent state.
In 1995, October 25 was first granted the status of a national holiday, and in 2001, Republic Day was designated as a state holiday.
In June 2022, at a meeting of the National Kurultai, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed restoring Republic Day’s status as a national holiday. In the same year, the holiday once again took a special place in the country’s calendar.
