Geneva, 22 September 2026 – Kazakhstan participated in the inaugural Giga Learning Hub Masterclass, organized by Giga, a joint initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
The Masterclass, entitled “Effective Regulation for Leveraging Satellite Technologies in Connecting Rural Schools to the Internet,” focused on the exchange of practical experience in satellite connectivity regulation and expanding connectivity to remote and underserved areas.
At Giga's invitation, a representative of the Telecommunications Committee of the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan presented the country's experience in developing digital infrastructure, deploying satellite technologies and bridging the digital divide.
The presentation highlighted key areas of Kazakhstan's “Accessible Internet” National Project for 2024–2027. By the end of 2027, Kazakhstan aims to provide 100% of its population with Internet access. More than 90% of rural settlements are expected to have access to high-speed Internet through wired technologies, while the most remote settlements will be connected using satellite solutions.
Currently, three satellite Internet operators are active in Kazakhstan, with two additional companies expected to enter the market. In addition, Kazakhstan plans to launch Direct-to-Cell (D2C) technology by the end of 2026 to further expand mobile connectivity.
Background:Giga is a joint ITU–UNICEF initiative aimed at connecting schools to the Internet. The Giga Learning Hub Masterclass series brings together government representatives, regulators and industry experts to exchange practical solutions and experience in advancing digital connectivity.
