On July 8, 2026, during a working visit, Zhandos Duysembiyev, Chairman of the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with Nuralkhan Kusherov, Akim of the Turkistan Region, visited the Zhibek Zholy checkpoint in the Saryagash District. There, they inspected the progress of the large-scale reconstruction of the largest passenger vehicle checkpoint on the Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan section of the EAEU external border. The inspection covered the current stage of project implementation, the pace of construction work, and the readiness of the facility, which is scheduled to be commissioned in September 2026.
The border crossing point currently undergoing modernization will be equipped with modern, high-tech systems for conducting customs and border control.
Construction is currently nearing completion on two separate new passenger terminals—designated for "export" and "import" traffic—designed in accordance with international standards. Work is also underway to install a large, unified canopy for the border and customs inspection of buses and passenger vehicles, as well as video surveillance systems.
A workforce of 270 is operating at the site in a continuous two-shift schedule.
The design capacity of the Zhibek Zholy border crossing point currently under modernization is 70,000 individuals, 2,000 passenger vehicles, and 200 buses per day.
Previously, the design capacity of the old crossing point was 17,000 individuals, 400 passenger vehicles, and 20 buses per day.
Following the site inspection and the meeting held on-site—attended by representatives of design and technical supervision—instructions were issued to ensure oversight of construction schedules and quality, and to take all necessary measures to complete the project within the established timeframes.
