    Birzhan Sal district was established on January 17, 1928 with the center in the village of Kazgorodok, Kzyl-Jara district. Located in the North-Eastern part of the region on the territory 10990 square kilometers, which is 7.5% of the area. The distance to the regional center is 120 km.
    The district borders Akzhar district in the North , Ualikhanov district in the East , Burabay district in the West, and Bulandyn district in the South.
    The population of the district is 14,700 thousand people, including: urban - 4 thousand people, rural - 13 thousand people. Population density (people per 1 square km) is 1.7 people. Ethnic composition (%): Kazakhs - 64%, Russians - 24.9%, other nationalities - 11.1%.
    Its administrative center is the city of Stepnyak.
    The district consists of 1 city, 14 rural districts, and 38 localities.
