Geneva, 4 November 2026 – During the visit of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), a Protocol to the Agreement on International Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and CERN, dated 29 June 2018, was signed.
With the support of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, the Minister held talks with Ursula Bassler, CERN Director for International Relations. The parties discussed prospects for further developing cooperation in nuclear physics, high-energy physics and fundamental research, as well as expanding the participation of Kazakhstani scientists in international research projects.
The signing of the Protocol is aimed at strengthening practical mechanisms for implementing the existing Agreement and creating additional opportunities for Kazakhstani research institutions and specialists to participate in CERN research programmes. Particular attention was paid to prospects for conducting joint research, training scientific personnel and exchanging expertise in advanced technologies.
During the visit, the Minister also met with Kazakhstani researchers from the Institute of Nuclear Physics who are working at CERN and participating in international experimental collaborations. The meeting addressed the results of their scientific work, the experience they have gained and prospects for the continued involvement of Kazakhstani specialists in international research.
Cooperation between Kazakhstan and CERN continues to develop steadily. In particular, in October 2026, the Institute of Nuclear Physics of Kazakhstan and CERN signed a Memorandum of Cooperation within the framework of the DRD1 international research collaboration, which focuses on the development of advanced detector technologies.
The visit and the signing of the Protocol mark another important step towards strengthening the scientific and technological partnership between Kazakhstan and CERN. They open up additional opportunities for developing Kazakhstan's scientific potential, training highly qualified specialists and expanding the country's participation in cutting-edge international research.
