Starting December 1, electric vehicle charging stations in Kazakhstan will undergo mandatory verification

Kazakhstan is introducing new requirements for measurement accuracy at electric vehicle charging stations. From 1 December 2026, measurements taken during EV charging will fall under state regulation, and the measuring instruments used for this purpose will be subject to mandatory verification.

The relevant requirements are set out in Order No. 272-NQ of the Minister of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 25 September 2026, “On Approval of the List of Measurements Subject to State Regulation.”

The changes are primarily aimed at ensuring accurate billing for EV charging services and protecting consumer interests.

Currently, the cost of charging an electric vehicle directly depends on the amount of electricity supplied. Therefore, it is important that the equipment used to determine the amount payable by the consumer provides the required level of measurement accuracy.

Under the new requirements, measuring instruments used at EV charging stations to record the amount of electricity supplied must comply with established metrological requirements and undergo timely verification.

Verification confirms that a measuring instrument is in proper working condition, operates within the required accuracy limits and correctly determines the actual amount of electricity supplied to an electric vehicle.

This provides consumers with an additional guarantee that they are paying only for the amount of electricity actually supplied during the charging process.

For owners and operators of EV charging stations, the new requirements mean that they will need to monitor whether their measuring equipment complies with the established requirements and ensure that it undergoes verification on time.

For EV owners, the changes provide additional protection against possible inaccuracies in billing and greater confidence in the accuracy of the equipment readings.

The introduction of mandatory measurement requirements is particularly relevant as electric transport develops and Kazakhstan’s charging infrastructure continues to expand. As the number of EV charging stations grows, unified market rules based on accuracy, transparency and trust between operators and consumers are also being established.
