Nairobi, 9 September 2026. The 13th Annual Subcommittee Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is taking place in Nairobi. The event is attended by a delegation of Kazakhstan headed by H.E. Mr. Barlybay Sadykov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Kenya and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
In his statement, Barlybay Sadykov highly commended the work of UNEP and highlighted the need to further strengthen regional and international environmental cooperation, with particular emphasis on the practical implementation of international commitments, the development of scientific and technological capacity, and ensuring sustainable financing for environmental initiatives.
In this context, particular importance was attached to the Regional Environmental Summit held in Astana in April 2026, as well as to the “Environmental Solidarity of Central Asia” Declaration adopted at its conclusion. The relevance of further strengthening the UNEP Subregional Office for Central Asia in Almaty and its prompt transformation into a fully-fledged regional environmental hub was emphasized.
The participants’ attention was drawn to the initiatives of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an International Water Organization under the auspices of the United Nations, as well as the adoption by the United Nations of a resolution designating 22 April as the International Day of Greening the Planet. The importance of sound management of global water resources and the establishment of a specialized international body with an appropriate mandate and resources for this purpose was emphasized. It was noted that the establishment of the International Day of Greening the Planet is fully aligned with Kazakhstan’s nationwide environmental initiative, “Taza Kazakhstan”, aimed at fostering a responsible attitude towards the environment, raising environmental awareness, and promoting more active civil society engagement in addressing environmental challenges.
Kazakhstan reaffirmed its readiness to continue constructive engagement with UNEP and UN Member States with a view to strengthening international environmental cooperation and advancing practical solutions in the areas of climate change, water security, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.
